Sydney vs Melbourne: Which City is Better for Exotic Car Hire?

Sydney and Melbourne both have 15 exotic car hire companies listed in our directory — a dead heat. But the experience of hiring a supercar in each city is completely different. After spending time with both, I've got opinions.

The short version: Melbourne is the better city for driving. Sydney is the better city for being seen. Which matters more to you will decide your pick.

Sydney: The Backdrop Wins

Let's be honest — nothing in Melbourne (or most other cities in the world) competes with cruising across the Harbour Bridge in a Ferrari with the Opera House in your peripheral vision. Sydney's geography is its superpower. The harbour, the coastline, the Northern Beaches — it's a naturally cinematic city, and a supercar just amplifies that.

The Northern Beaches coastal drive from Manly up to Palm Beach is one of Australia's best urban drives. It's about 40 kilometres of ocean views, cliff roads, and small beach towns. In a convertible — a Lamborghini Huracán Spyder or a Ferrari Portofino — it's hard to beat.

The Grand Pacific Drive south from Sydney through the Royal National Park to Wollongong is another standout. The Sea Cliff Bridge alone is worth the hire fee — a 665-metre elevated road curving along the clifftop above the ocean.

But here's where Sydney falls down: the traffic is awful, and the tolls are worse. Sydney has more toll roads than any city in Australia, and they add up shockingly fast. A return trip through the harbour tunnel, across the M2, and down the M5 can easily cost $50-70 in tolls in a single day. Your hire company may charge an admin fee on top for processing toll notices — ask about this upfront.

Parking in the CBD is expensive ($60-80/day in a secure lot) and street parking is tight. Sydney was not designed for wide cars.

Typical daily hire rates in Sydney: a Lamborghini Huracán runs $1,800-2,500 AUD per day, a Ferrari 488 around $1,500-2,200 AUD, and a Porsche 911 Turbo from $800-1,200 AUD.

Melbourne: The Driver's City

Melbourne doesn't have Sydney's natural drama, but it has something that matters more when you're behind the wheel: brilliant roads within easy reach.

The Great Ocean Road starts about 90 minutes from Melbourne's CBD and is regularly named one of the best driving roads in the world. It's the single biggest reason Melbourne wins for driving.

But it's not just the Great Ocean Road. The Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges offer winding mountain roads through eucalyptus forest, just 45 minutes east of the city. The Mornington Peninsula has gentle coastal roads and winery stops. And if you want to go further, the Alpine Road up toward Mount Hotham is one of Australia's most underrated driving roads — smooth, well-maintained, and genuinely twisty.

Melbourne's road surfaces are generally better than Sydney's too. Fewer potholes, smoother tarmac on the major routes. When you're driving something with a ride height of 12 centimetres, that matters.

The car culture in Melbourne is also stronger. You'll find more car meets, more enthusiast communities, and hire companies that are genuinely run by people who love cars rather than just renting them. That translates into better-maintained vehicles and better advice on routes.

Melbourne pricing is similar to Sydney — expect $1,600-2,400 AUD per day for a Lamborghini Huracán, $1,400-2,000 AUD for a Ferrari, and $700-1,100 AUD for a Porsche 911. Slightly lower on average, and you're more likely to find mid-week deals.

The Rest of Australia

Sydney and Melbourne dominate, but they're not your only options. Our directory also lists hire companies in:

Brisbane (5 listings) — Good base for drives up to the Sunshine Coast hinterland or down to the Gold Coast. Less traffic than Sydney or Melbourne.

Gold Coast (5 listings) — Popular for special occasions. The M1 motorway isn't exciting, but the Tamborine Mountain roads and the drive up to Springbrook National Park are worth it.

Perth (3 listings) — Underrated. The Indian Ocean coastal road north from Perth to Lancelin is empty, straight, and stunning. If you want to open up a car without worrying about traffic, Perth is hard to beat.

Adelaide (2 listings) — Small market, but the Adelaide Hills offer some of Australia's best B-roads, and the Barossa Valley makes for a classy day trip in a GT car.

Our Verdict

If you're hiring a supercar primarily for photos, a proposal, a birthday cruise, or just the experience of being in an exotic car in a beautiful setting — Sydney wins. The harbour, the beaches, the bridges — the backdrop is unmatched.

If you actually want to drive — feel the car, push it a bit, experience proper roads with elevation changes and corners that reward a good car — Melbourne wins. The Great Ocean Road alone seals it, but the surrounding options push it further ahead.

Either way, you've got 15 hire companies to choose from in each city. That's genuine competition, which means better prices and better service than you'd find in a market with only two or three operators. Compare a few, read reviews, and book mid-week if you can — most companies offer 10-20% off Tuesday through Thursday rates.
